Math
Math Coordinator: Barbara Tenin - This is my seventh year teaching and seventh year at BEAM. I have taught everything from 3rd-8th grade, but am now focused on the math curriculum. I graduated from UW-Madison with a degree in Elementary Education and French. My license includes Prek-6th grade. I am in the process of earning my Masters degree in Administrative Leadership and Director of Curriculum from Alverno College. My favorite educational quote is, "If you listen and observe children, they will tell you how to teach them," by Jawanza Kunjufu. Outside of BEAM, I enjoy spending time with my family and friends, going to musicals, plays..etc, and traveling.

Everyday Mathematics is a comprehensive pre-kindergarten through 6th grade mathematics curriculum developed by the Univeristy of Chicago School Mathematics Project and pushblished by Wright Group McGraw-Hill.
Everyday Mathematics is used by Kindergarten through 5th grade at BEAM.
Students acquire knowledge and skills, and develop an understanding of mathematics from their own experience. Teachers and other adults play a very important role in providing children with rich and meaningful mathematical experiences.
This is a curriculum that:
- Emphasizes conceptual understanding while building a mastery of basic skills
- Explores the full mathematics spectrum, not just basic arithmetic
- Is based on how students learn, what they're interest in, and the future for which they must be prepared
- Uses real world situations paired with grade-level explorations to make math more meaningful to the students
- Includes technology as a way to extend their knowledge and the use of skills
Daily routines and games are part of the program and it offers materials that provide students with a rich variety of experiences that include whole class, small group, and independent work, with the use of manipulatives and tools. Skills taught through the scope and sequence of the lessons align with Wisconsin State Standards very well.
Prentice Hall is a comprehensive middle through high school math program.
Prentice Hall is used by all of our 6-8th graders at BEAM.
It is a curriculum that:
- Creates hands-on and model based learning experiences for students.
- Is based on brain research on how students learn.
- Algined to the standards.
- Builds understanding through guided problem solving with real-world problems and group interactions.
- Emphsizes conceptual knowledge and skill mastery with cohesive lessons that build on each other.
Math Experiences at BEAM
- Problem of the week contest: students complete a word problem each week in their classrooms at their grade level. Students that get the correct answer receive a prize.
- Pi Day competition: students have the opportunity to memorize digits of the mathematical constant pi and compete against classmates to see who can memorize the most. Winners from each grade level throw a pie in a teacher's face.
- Math League competitions: grade level competitions sponsored by the Wisconsin Math League.
- Weekly Five Minute Facts: students try to answer a grade level appropriate number of math facts in five minutes to improve their skills and knowledge.
